Description

Copthorne Primary School, Horton Grange Primary School and Horton Park Primary School invite headteachers and subject leaders to join this programme in order to consider effective practice in the teaching of Reading across the primary phase. The three schools will share aspects of their practice that have helped them to maintain positive pupil outcomes at the end of Key Stage 2 in 2016. There is no single strategy that resulted in these outcomes: the schools have focused on teaching and learning and developed a culture of continuous improvement. The schools will share their individual approaches for attendees to consider and adapt to their own school’s needs and context.

Session 1 (13:00-15:00, 30th September 2016) - Whole-School Leadership of Reading: A session for the Headteacher and the English Subject Leader to consider the whole-school approach to reading and pupils’ entitlement presented in the Assessment and Reporting Arrangements (ARA) statutory guidance. We ask schools attending the programme to ensure both colleagues are able to attend this event.

The following sessions are for the English Subject Leader (one person per school):

Session 2a (13:00-15:00, 6th October) - The Teaching of Reading: Subject Leaders from Copthorne, Horton Grange and Horton Park will share their school’s approaches.

Session 2b (09:00-12:00, 7th October) - Classroom Visits: Delegates will undertake three short visits to the host schools to see aspects of Session 2 in practice.

Session 3a (13:00-15:00, 12th October) - Guided Reading: Subject Leaders from Copthorne, Horton Grange and Horton Park will share their school’s approaches.

Session 3b (09:00-12:00, 13th October) - Classroom Visits: Delegates will undertake three short visits to the host schools to see aspects of Session 4 in practice.

Session 4a (13:00-15:00, 1st November) - Reading Provision Beyond the Classroom: Subject Leaders from Copthorne, Horton Grange and Horton Park will share their school’s approaches.

Session 4b (09:00-12:00, 2nd November) - Classroom Visits: Delegates will undertake three short visits to the host schools to see aspects of Session 6 in practice.
